On June 18th and 19th in the year 1865, Union General Gordon Grainger led his army into Galveston, Texas to take control of the Lone Star State and enforce President Lincoln's executive orders, collectively called the Emancipation Proclamation, which directed that slaves in the Confederate States of America be freed. Blacks around the nation celebrate that historical event on June 19th as Juneteenth, Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. As we celebrate our nation's 233rd year of independence this weekend, ... More

Over the last two weeks, when things were going to hell in a handbasket in Iran, President Obama has been schooled by a couple of females. First, he came out late and little on the protesting in the streets of Tehran. As people died confronting Iran's corrupt leadership, Obama was meek and non-commital on supporting them. Meanwhile, in Germany, President Angela Merkel was front and center, calling for new elections and condemning what was an obviously rigged vote in ... More

The June 25 "Bookshelf" column in the Wall Street Journal featured a book review by Geoffrey Norman of the new book,  "Goat Song" by Brad Kessler.  This book is focused on Mr. Kessler's purchase of an abandoned 18th century farmhouse sitting on 75 acres in Vermont where he and his wife tried to launch a goat cheese production operation.   Mr. Kessler's book notes that he even traveled to France to learn the ... The term is Latin meaning "bread and circuses".  It is a metaphor for handouts and petty amusements that politicians use to gain popular support, instead of gaining it through sound policy. The phrase is invoked not only to criticize politicians, but also to criticize their supporters for giving up their civic duty. The phrase originates from Satire X of the Roman poet Juvenal. The phrase  is given as the only remaining cares of a Roman populace ... More

Barack Obama wants a "Domestic security force just as strong and just as well funded as our military." Mr President, rather than tearing a group of high school kids away from their video games, and sending them out to respond to a natural disaster or terrorist attack, try and learn something of this country's history. Start with learning about something called the National Guard. Then consider  that at one time, in addition to the Guard,  ... More

The New King George Posted on 29 June 2009 by Rob Natelson In Washington, D.C. a group presents the Secretary of Education with a 120,000-signature petition asking the federal government to fund an effort to require every public school student in the country to take courses the group favors. In Montana, activists flood the newspapers with letters urging that Congress force all Americans into a single government-run health care system. In California, state officials lobby the U.S. Treasury to ... More

I have yet to see anybody discuss one particular aspect of Cap and Trade. This aspect spells the end of the Free Market. A little background first. If you are familiar with tobacco allotments that may be all you need to know. If you haven’t heard of tobacco allotments let me explain a bit. When the government decided to cap the amount of tobacco grown they began an allotment system much like cap and trade. Each farmer ... More

Cap and Traitor (from The Tentacle 062909) Steven R. Berryman   The House of Representatives barely passed the first stage in President Obama’s “Cap-and-Trade” energy/ecology legislation late Friday 219-212. This, with the help of eight Republican traitors crossing over to vote, and having not read the bill, hundreds of pages of which only just became available at 3 A.M. on the day of the vote.   Most Republicans stood unified, but the Democrats stole the day, ... IDEAS FOR SCHOOL REFORM Article states what is wrong with the public schools, how we got where we are, and what we do to improve. A fairly aggressive, sweeping  article with lots of specifics. Even if you don’t agree with all the details, the article will help you organize your thoughts. (About 1500 words. Actual title: 38: Saving Public Schools)   My thought in general is that conservatives have to save the schools in order to save the broader ... More
