The Greatest Hoax in History
![]()
As the absolutely awful Cap and Trade bill filters its way through the Senate, now is an excellent time to discuss the greatest hoax in history, known as the theory of man-made global warming/global climate change/global cooling or whatever other conditions liberals come up with to make it sound like a forthcoming calamity. The fact is, the idea that we are responsible for any great degree of climate change is demonstrably false, as are claims of coming environmental catastrophe.
While many scientists buy into global warming theory, there are also a significant number who do not. And they have perfectly valid science backing them up, while the proponents of manmade warming often have to doctor their results, hide findings that do not fit their pre-established conclusion and rely on circular logic to prove their point.
Before tackling any other issue, however, we need to attack the fundamental fallacy behind the “environmental” movement – that climate change is a bad thing. It is simply impossible to make that assertion because we do not know that the climate is perfect in its current state. The question we need to ask and have answered BEFORE engaging in ANY kind of regulatory plan is: What is the ideal temperature for the Earth? Without knowing that, how can we possibly tailor our policies to bring about the temperatures we need? Is the Earth’s current average temperature ideal? Was the temperature more ideal in the early 1800’s, during the “little ice age” when things were cooler? Would the temperature be ideal if it were five or seven degrees warmer? More importantly, can we even know the answer to this question? And is there only one right answer, or does it vary based on geographic location?
The entire green movement is based on a lie – which is that the climate should remain as it is right now. The climate does not work that way; it is not a static system with a set temperature and set global conditions. The climate is dynamic, and has been changing since the day the earth formed. This has been the case since before any life existed, not just human life, and it will always be the case until the Earth perishes. Yet we are told to believe that this naturally occurring phenomenon is an oncoming apocalypse and we are entirely to blame for it.
We are told that our carbon emissions are the driving force behind climate change, and that if we do nothing to stop carbon emissions, the planet will heat up by 10 or more degrees, the ice caps will melt, the earth will flood and those who survive will have to become cannibals (Ted Turner said it) to survive in a barbaric world. Carbon makes up about 0.03 – 0.04 percent of our atmosphere. The most prevalent greenhouse gas in our atmosphere is water vapor – accounting for about 60-70 percent of greenhouse gases. Yet still, we are told that Carbon is the main source of the problem. And to prove it, scientists use a computer model that is programmed to accept carbon as the primary warming agent in our atmosphere. How exactly does this work? A computer model is set up with the assumption that carbon causes atmospheric warming, and this is then used to prove that carbon is responsible for warming? The premise is used to prove itself – which we all know is a logical fallacy – or circular logic.
If we are so concerned about greenhouse gases though, why are we focusing on carbon when water vapor is clearly a bigger problem? Wouldn’t it make sense to work on regulating the largest greenhouse gas on the planet? And this is where the truth comes out. The dirty secret is that there is no way to regulate water vapor – but there is a way to regulate carbon, and it involves attacking productivity. Carbon is the inevitable result of almost any activity people engage in. Burning coal or oil for energy creates carbon, as does burning wood. Driving a car emits carbon. We literally cannot take a breath without emitting carbon. Thus, by regulating carbon, environmentalists can regulate everything in our lives, and this is the underlying goal of the environmental movement. There are many people with good hearts who take up the cause of environmentalism – I was once one – and they genuinely believe in the threat and want to do good. The problem is that the people driving the movement are taking advantage of these good folks and using them to further a Marxist agenda.
Case in point, the cap and trade bill rammed through Congress Friday – before many of the voting members even had a chance to read it all. This is a bill that even proponents have admitted will not have a significant impact on global temperature (using the environmentalists’ own global warming models and assumptions shows a maximum temperature reduction of 0.09 of one degree Fahrenheit by the year 2050 if every target of the bill is met), but that even the President has admitted will cause energy prices to soar. This is a piece of legislation that has absolutely no demonstrable impact on the environment, according even to proponents, but which nearly every living economist agrees will hurt the economy. Given that this bill does nothing for the environment, but will cripple economic production, what other conclusion is there except that this is an all out assault on the free market?
Add in the fact now that the EPA suppressed a report that contradicted the environmentalist case for such regulations and the case for human caused warming becomes even weaker. Yes, the most “transparent administration in history” felt it was necessary to obfuscate a 98 page report skeptical of the role of carbon in global warming, and that demonstrated warming has not taken place at all over the last decade. If the science of man-made global climate change is settled, why would proponents need to hide such a report? If their case is as strong as they would have us believe, it would be a simple matter to demonstrate that it was wrong.
Can it be any clearer? A bill that has almost no environmental impact but gives the government unprecedented controls over businesses and our individual lives sails through Congress while many of the members have no idea what the bill even contains. Clearly this is an effort not to save the planet, but to grow the size and role of government at the expense of the free-market and our individual liberties. We cannot stand by and accept the lie – we must fight back with everything we have. Right now, that means contacting Senators to ensure they put a stop to this nonsense. Our founders warned us to jealously guard our freedoms lest we them. The situation is deteriorating already, and has been for some time thanks to big government liberals in both parties, but it is not irreversible yet. We need to draw a line in the sand and stand by it, and from there, we can begin to take back the ground we have already lost.
