Femi-Nazis vs. Femi-Regulars
![]()
For years, I’ve proudly said, “I am not a feminist” because I did not want to be lumped in with the whining, man-hating feminists who Rush Limbaugh calls “femi-nazis”.
Let’s face it, while most women were getting things done, little things like defeating communism in the case of Lady Thatcher, the feminists seemed obsessively focused on reducing housework and killing babies. The National Organization of Women did not and does not speak for most women.
Now the battle between the “femi-nazis” and what I call the “femi-regulars” (sometimes you just have to invent your own words when none will do) is being played out in full view because of Sarah Palin. I call her femi-regular because she’s like most of the women I know who are too busy accomplishing things to whine.
Referring to Sarah Palin, Gloria Steinem, that great champion of women, said: “This isn't the first time a boss has picked an unqualified woman just because she agrees with him and opposes everything most other women want and need.” She further elaborated in an editorial in the Los Angeles Times:
So let's be clear: The culprit is John McCain. He may have chosen Palin out of change-envy, or a belief that women can't tell the difference between form and content, but the main motive was to please right-wing ideologues; the same ones who nixed anyone who is now or ever has been a supporter of reproductive freedom.
And American women, who suffer more because of having two full-time jobs than from any other single injustice, finally have support on a national stage from male leaders who know that women can't be equal outside the home until men are equal in it. Barack Obama and Joe Biden are campaigning on their belief that men should be, can be and want to be at home for their children.
Steinem’s real motives jump off the page. She is only interested in the advancement of women who support abortion. She claims that Palin is unqualified despite the fact that she has successfully rooted out corruption, run a city, and run a state while garnering an approval rating of over 80%. If she were pro-abortion we might imagine that Steinem herself would be planning the Palin parade.
But the last part of Steinem’s editorial was most absurd. She says our greatest social injustice is that we have “two full time jobs”. Wow. Women in
Do the femi-nazis see all men as Dagwood Bumstead sleeping on the couch? The fathers that I know, including my own father who was born in 1920, take their children to soccer, boy scouts, ballet, and church or synagogue. They read them books, change their diapers, fix them meals, pack their lunches and encourage their passions. They discipline them, nurture them, love them and lead them. This is typical old feminism pitting husband against wife, man against woman.
She claims that women finally have support from male leaders who believe that women can’t be equal outside the home until men are equal in it. Really? We should vote for Obama/Biden because they will encourage husbands to, say, vacuum more?
It is most insulting that Steinem leaves us with the notion that we should choose the leader of the free world based on whether: (1) They support abortion; (2) They nudge hubbies to do their fair share of housework; (3) They encourage daddies to be home for their children. Wow, look how far we women have come. We should vote for the male candidate who wants to do the dishes and take care of whatever baby the woman decides not to kill.
Here’s a crazy thought: Maybe, instead, we should vote for principled, honest, strong, America-loving folks who will stand up to evil, advance liberty and let our free enterprise system flourish.
When the old feminists try to destroy Governor Palin, I think, “bring it on” because a shot at her is a shot at all of the “femi-regulars”. If this battle is about who has the most soldiers, we win.
I am proud to be the daughter and granddaughter of strong women who loved their husbands, got things done, nurtured their children, served their community and loved their country. The kind of women who had a spirit of giving and selflessness that the old feminists might deride, but that those who truly love their fellow citizen would applaud. The kind of women who didn’t feel it a sign of weakness to put others first.
I am often inspired by regular women, who are so busy changing the world through small daily acts that they don’t have time to whine. Women who remind me a lot of Sarah Palin. For lack of a better term you can call them the femi-regulars.
