It is true that the management of the auto industry has made many mistakes (see Detroit Three: Thanks for the Memories http://regularfolksunited.com/index.php?tab=article_view&article_id=561), but it sickens me to see them grovelling before Congress, perhaps the only other people on the planet that squander more money than the auto industry.

Begging for a deal from this Congress is like begging Jack Kevorkian to perform open heart surgery on your grandma.  This Congress and the incoming President's "Tsar" will give the unions more power and will further destroy these companies.  Note that the UAW President asked Congress for a blank check now, but insisted that they work out the details with the new administration. Does anyone think that the new administration will encourage serious concessions from the very union that helped them get in office?

A Chapter 11 reorganization holds promise for a stronger auto industry that is leaner, more competitive and more profitable.  Let them deal with the consequences of bad contracts, poor productivity and yes, even the consequences of Congressional meddling. Let the country see what happens when unions exert too much power, employees get paid to not work, Congress forces lenders to make bad loans, restricts oil production and creates fanciful fuel efficiency standards.

Executive and Legislative Branch control over this industry is a recipe for disaster.  If there is anyone who can do a worse job than the auto industry at running the auto industry it would be Pelosi, Reid and Obama and their union friends/donors.

Wake up Americans, you've been bamboozled.  This is simply government and union control of industry.  It is a sad day for America

Lori excellent read. The Auto Unions will put the Big Three in their graves before they give back one cent. How did it ever become a noble thing to get paid for not doing any work? I am disgusted by our Government, the Big Three and the UAW. All three want in our pockets. If the likes of Pelosi, Reid, Dodd and Frank are put in charge of the auto industry God help us.

Right on, Lori! My questions: What should Ford (I'm a loyal Ford driver) do, under chapter 11, to cut out the union abusers and still keep a workforce? In KY, Ford employs about 6,000 people. Michigan politicians have created laws that help the unions commit the abuse, right? Is it time to leave Michigan? Do retiring workers get to keep their pensions, or do the unions take a cut?

All I can say is that in watching our Democrat Congress I'm watching the live version of "Atlas Shrugged". This bailout is a bailout of the greedy socialist style union bosses and contracts. Join me in demanding that at least Congressional Republicans start fighting for our Constitution. I'm so tired of Republicans giving in and compromising. *** http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/we-demand-true-conservative-leadership.html ***

Thanks again, Lori, for a cogent and powerful article. If we have any means of putting pressure on the Senate, this is the time to use it. The slippery slope begins with the passage of this bill, and every business that's in trouble will expect to be helped or wonder why the auto industry is worthy and they aren't. A lot of other businesses will rise and fall but won't beg the government for money because they put their businesses on their backs and accept responsibility for success or failure. Too bad no one's out there playing Santa Claus for them.

And too further add insult to injury and put salt in the wound they have added an item to give Federal Judges a $5k raise in this Bill. These folks have no shame. Some have been using the word Shocked here lately in regards to dishonest politicians. Nothing they do anymore shocks me. http://www.abajournal.com/news/auto_bailout_bill_passed_by_house_includes_5k_hike_for_judges/
